THE CONSULTATION
During the homeopathic consultation, the therapist makes use of two main types of books: a Repertory (of symptoms) and a Materia Medica (list of remedies and their characteristics).
Homeopaths are interested, first and foremost, in all the symptoms, feelings and modalities of the patient: by analysing and grouping these together, with care they find central triggers, underlying themes, weaknesses and patterns of reaction that point to one or more remedies.
Homeopaths do not need to diagnose conditions, nor in most countries are they allowed legally to do so; by analysing and investigating the whole body, however, they are able to detect imbalances in the endocrine, digestive, nervous and circulatory system and point to ways to bring these back into an organic balance.
We start by discussing the present symptoms and conditions, but we then discuss the history behind these: this is to find the possible causes, which might or might not be obvious.
For those who are new to this type of consultation, it might be useful to know in advance that homeopaths are interested in the colours and consistency of various discharges, as these are indications of the type of ailment and remedy. To give an example: green, yellow, thick or thin, are indications of mucous and/ or the end stages of infection, whether this be in stools or oral/nasal discharges.
The first consultation usually takes longer, as most holistic therapists need to take medical history and family background into account, to have a clearer view of patient’s health patterns.
At the end of the consultation, I will usually be able to advise one or more remedies to start the journey. Sometimes I might also advise some mineral supplements or medicinal herbs, as long as the patient is open to this. I usually prefer to suggest supplements that are plant based, unless there is a strong need to address a particular element.
For most ailments it would be advisable to have 1 or 2 fairly close follow-up appointments and afterwards slowly tailor them apart until a comfortable rhythm towards health is established.
